PROJECT DESCRIPTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

As of 2000 Sicily is the third Italian region by number of passengers with Catania “Fontanarossa” Airport being the main regional hub.
The Environmental Impact Study covers the Airport Development Plan which calls for an important reorganization and upgrade of the infrastructure. The most relevant actions regard taxiway construction, expansion of terminals and new internal mobility system with the separation of departure and arrival passenger flows. Two significant reasons are at the base of the intervention: the current critical functional issues, due to the configuration of the entire airport area, limiting the operational capacity of Fontanarossa airport below the present air traffic demand and the necessity to improve this capacity in order to satisfy the future growth of passenger flows caused by the Development Plan itself.<\/p>\n


PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The study carefully addresses the following specific subjects:<\/p>\n

• Programmatic framework definition which refers not only to the identification of logic relations, but also to the determination of infrastructural projects aimed at:<\/p>\n

   – Increasing airport accessibility;
   – Directing the work towards the environmental measures proposed by the EIS;<\/p>\n

• Analysis of the induced impact on the road network comprising of a traffic flow study supported by a survey regarding passenger and commuter habits;
• Assessment of the acoustic effects resulting from the aircraft increase including experimental characterization of GPU (Ground Power Unit) noise levels;
• Examination of issues related to the bird-strike phenomenon taking into account the nearby presence of Simeto Nature Reserve;
• Evaluation of the effects caused by electromagnetic fields through internal and external measurements.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
