It connects the Italian territory (in the municipality of Limone Piemonte) with the French one (in the municipality of Tenda).<br \/>The project involved the construction of a new tunnel and the boring of the existing one in order to separate the two driving directions.<br \/>The overall objective of the project was to improve the links between Italy and France enhancing the tunnel safety conditions and service levels which were clearly below standards from a technical and functional point of view.<\/p>\n<p>The interventions can be summarized as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enlargement of the existing tunnel cross-section through boring for a length of 3.184 m;<\/li>\n<li>Construction of a new tunnel, along the present one, with a length of 3,252 m;<\/li>\n<li>Removal of two sharp bends just before the tunnel entrance on the French side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS<\/p>\n<p>On the basis of the performed analyses, the environmental components affected more seriously by the potential cross-border impacts were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Underground and hydrogeological aquatic environment;<\/li>\n<li>Excavated soil and rock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the analysis and assessment of the environmental impacts, mitigation and compensation measures were proposed.
