Environmental studies for the safety and modernization of the Peschiera water system – Adductor Ottavia – Triumphal in Rome

The project called “Adductrice Ottavia – Trionfale” is among the works of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) specifically falls under Mission M2C4 Investment 4.1 (“Investments in primary water infrastructure for the security of water supply”).

The work concerns the construction of the Adductor Ottavia – Trionfale, which is part of the Project for the safety and modernization of the supply of the metropolitan city of Rome (“Safety and modernization of the Peschiera water system”).

The current supply system from the CI of Ottavia to the Nodo Trionfale consists of pipes made in the year ’50 in CAP or reinforced concrete type Bonna: they therefore have a life of over 60 years, and the type of material makes their repair complex and lengthy in the event of damage. The project is necessary to ensure a potential increase in power supply for the future needs of the affected areas and to address critical and out-of-service incidents involving existing adductors, ensuring adequate redundancy for both the transport infrastructure and the Trionfale hub itself.

These needs have led to the need to build a new connection line from the Ottavia Water Centre to a new water center called Pineta Sacchetti, creating a bypass of the existing Trionfale water center.

The project intervention involves the construction of a first steel duct from the CI Ottavia up to a structure called Casale del Marmo; the start from Ottavia is planned directly from the intake structure so as to be functional to the future plan that the water center will adopt following its renovation.

From the Casale del Marmo Manufacture, where provision is made for connecting other future pipelines, a DN2500mm steel pipeline will be laid up to the Monte Mario railway station car park. At this point, a divider called Monte Mario will be installed, from which two pipelines will exit; one with DN2000 that will continue towards the new Pineta Sacchetti water center and the other pipeline with DN800 that will be laid along Via Cesare Castiglioni to connect to the existing DN700 pipeline that goes towards Ponte Galeria. The total length of the interventions is approximately 5200 meters.

For the project “Adductor Ottavia – Trionfale”, the Environmental Impact Assessment procedure (PNIEC-PNRR), started in May 2022, was successfully concluded in March 2023.
