Rome Anagnina Corridor Technical and Economic Feasibility Project – Ciampino Airport – Ciampino Railway Station Connection – Preliminary Environmental Study

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project under consideration concerns the construction of a mass rapid transport (TRM) connection between the Anagnina intermodal hub and Ciampino Airport, through an Anagnina – Ciampino Stazione mobility corridor and a complementary connection between the station and the airport. In the Metropolitan City’s PUMS strategy, Ciampino station, the convergence point of the Rome-Cassino line and the three Castelli railways, is a natural gateway to the Castelli Romani metropolitan area, a basin of 13 municipalities. These elements define Ciampino station, the main one in Lazio outside the Rome railway ring, as a modern metropolitan intermodal hub and “Porta dei Castelli”.

The city of Rome has an urban public transport network that needs to be improved, creating connections between the already well-served urban center and the peripheral areas. Urban development in recent decades has tended to amplify the separation between the urban center and the residential hinterland, making it difficult to develop quality local public transport services, creating road congestion, resulting in worsening service for users and increased operating costs.

The corridor proposal was included in the PUMS scenario for the city of Rome, adopted on August 2, 2019. With brief no. 62 of August 17, 2021, the Capitoline Council, pending the implementation measures of the PUMS, mandated the initiation of activities to implement the trend scenario or the included interventions and to identify the implementation schedule when the plan is next updated. In this regard, it is worth emphasizing that intermunicipal interventions, such as the one in question, are included by the Rome Capital PUMS in the Tendential Scenario, as they relate –also in terms of resources– to the drafting PUMS of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, which will have the task of homogenizing the interventions envisaged by the municipal PUMS with those envisaged by the metropolitan one.

The proposed design hypothesis is developed in the south-eastern area of the municipal territory of the city of Rome, in the Municipio VII, and then settled in the territory of the Municipality of Ciampino. The key infrastructure elements of this area are Via Tuscolana, Via Anagnina, the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA), the Anagnina Metro Station and Ciampino Airport. The design solutions intersect both the Via Tuscolana and the GRA starting from the Anagnina Metro Station and developing towards Ciampino Airport.

The urban areas in the municipality of Rome crossed by the project proposal are: Osteria del Curato, which houses the Anagnina Metro Station, Don Bosco, Appio Claudio, Lucrezia Romana, Quarto Miglio, Gregna, Morena and Ciampino.

In the Municipality of Ciampino, the solution mainly runs along the infrastructure axis of Viale JF Kennedy in the city center up to the Ciampino train station and airport.
