Preliminary Environmental Study (SPA) of the extension and strengthening of the Duca d’Aosta Dam in the port of Naples DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The project followed several phases in which VDP developed the drafting of environmental documentation to support the EIA Subject ability Verification procedure. Specifically, the project concerned the following functional excerpts, each of which followed the aforementioned environmental procedure:

Port of Naples – Extension of the Duca D’Aosta Dam to protect the new Eastern Container Terminal – I Excerpt

  • Subject to VIA (start: January 2020 – end: January 2021)
  • Compliance. (Start: July 2024 – End: October 2024)

Port of Naples – Extension and strengthening of the Duca d’Aosta dam – Lot A: Extension of the Duca d’Aosta dam to protect the new Eastern Containers Terminal – II Excerpt.”

  • Subject to VIA (start: August 2022 – end: November 2022)
  • Compliance (start: March 2025 – end: CTVIA technical investigation underway)

Port of Naples – Extension and strengthening of the Duca d’Aosta dam – Lot B: Strengthening

  • Subject to VIA (start: September 2023 – end: December 2023)
  • Compliance (Start: May 2024 – End: September 2024)
  • Compliance (Start: January 2025 – End: May 2025)

L’ a large project called “Extension and strengthening of the Duca D’Aosta Forane Dam”, divided by the AdSP into two distinct functionally independent lots, concerns interventions on existing infrastructure located in different areas and subservient to different objectives:

  • Lot A – Extension to the east with cellular caissons of the breakwater, with the aim of improving the protection of the eastern mouth of the port of Naples and the docks of the new eastern dock
  • Lot B – Strengthening of the existing dam with pouring works and local restoration/repair interventions of existing structures, aimed at mitigating the risk of instability of the existing infrastructure

The Project for the Extension of the Duca D’Aosta Dam I° and II° excerpt, for a total length of approximately 205 m, to be conducted in the port of Naples is aimed at definitively guaranteeing the protection of the eastern access channel.

The intervention to strengthen the sections characterized by greater vulnerability of the Duca d’Aosta breakwater was developed through the construction of a trapezoidal-section cast structure, consisting of a core made of natural boulders that integrates the existing basing massif, protected by a filter layer of natural boulders and a mantle made of tetrapod arranged in a double layer and resting at the foot on a foundation berm.

STUDY SPECIFICITY

As part of the project, the following specialized studies were developed: weather-marine and wave motion agitation studies, morphological and morphodynamical studies.

The documentation relating to the Preliminary Environmental Study has been accompanied by graphic works and specialized attachments, such as:

  • Archaeological study
  • Environmental monitoring plan
  • Subject management report
  • Landscape relationship pursuant to the Prime Ministerial Decree 12/12/2005
